ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
The Environmental Protectin Agency (EPA) created the Energy Star program. The goal is to reducing power requirements for system units, monitors, and printers. For more information, please refer to http://www.greenpc.com.au/
The Green PC
The basic elements of the Green PC are :
~ system unit :
By using the portable computers, we can : uses the energy-saving microprocessor, the portable computers can shift to sleep mode when not in operation, replaces the conventional power supply unit with an adapter that requires less electricity and eliminatesthe cooling fan.
~ display :
Made more energy efficient by using flat panels, special power-down monitors, and screen-saver software.
~ manufacuring :
Intel, Apple,Compaq and others are using fewer harmful chemicals in production. Particular attention is given to chlorofluorocarbons(CFCs) in solvents and cleaning agents. Not all the manufacturing are using this kind of chemical to create a new computer.
Personal Responsibility
~ conserve :
The EPA estimates that 30-40% of computer users leave their computer running days, night & weekends. 80% of monitor are on, no one is looking at it. To solve this problems we can use the screen-saver programs that blank the computer screen after 3 - 5 minutes of inactivity.
~recycle :
The things always recycle that we can see is papers. Other recycle items include computer boxes, packaging material, printer catridges & floopy disks.

~educate :
Carefully and learn more about ecological dangers of all types. Make you concerns to known manufacturers & retail agencies.
Summary :
As a user of computers,we need to take responsible to the environment protection. Nowaday, many people already have their own computer, but they are not use it with wisely. Some of us will open their computer in whole day, they also not turn off their computer when not to use it. This is a electrical wasting behaviour. The higher technology are create the more pollution of environment. So, we suggest all the users of computer please shut down your computer when not to use its.

GREEN PC
Citation:
- Green computing or green IT, refers to environmentally sustainable computing or IT.
- In the article Harnessing Green IT: Principles and Practices, San Murugesan defines the field of green computing as "the study and practice of designing, manufacturing, using, and disposing of computers, servers, and associated subsystems—such as monitors, printers, storage devices, and networking and communications systems—efficiently and effectively with minimal or no impact on the environment."
- The goals of green computing are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote the recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.
- Research continues into key areas such as making the use of computers as energy-efficient as possible, and designing algorithms and systems for efficiency-related computer technologies.
- Many governmental agencies have continued to implement standards and regulations that encourage green computing.

CHAPTER 10 PRIVACY AND SECURITY
COMPUTER CRIME
Computer crime, or cybercrime, refers to any crime that involves a computer and a network. The computer may have been used in the commission of a crime, or it may be the target.
Netcrime refers, more precisely, to criminal exploitation of the Internet. Issues surrounding this type of crime have become high-profile, particularly those surrounding hacking, copyright infringement, child pornography, and child grooming. There are also problems of privacy and confidential information is lost or intercepted, lawfully or otherwise.
TYPES OF COMPUTER CRIMES
Distributed denial of service attacks rank among the most widely reported cyber-crimes. They first appeared in mid-1999 and are relatively easy to perpetrate. Many of the tools required to carry them off are freely available online. Often, DDS attack networks consist of hundreds of compromised systems. The attacker inaugurates the attack sequence from one or more consoles, and it can affect thousands of systems worldwide.
Virus programs infect computer files by inserting copies of themselves into those files; they are spread from host to host when users transmit infected files by e-mail, over the Internet, across a company's network, or by disk. Related problems include worms, which can travel within a computer or network without a user transmitting files; trojan horses, which are disguised as innocuous files but which, once activated, can steal users' login names and passwords, thus facilitating identity theft; and logic bombs, programs activated by a specific event.
Other widely publicized computer crimes involved online fraud, such as stock scams and securities fraud via the Internet. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which receives about 300 complaints a day concerning online scams, devotes one-fourth of its enforcement staff to computer-related offenses. Theft of online content also is common. A Software & Information Industry Association study maintained that one-third of all business software applications in use in 1999 were pirated copies. And the Internet has made the distribution of information obtained in identity thefts, such as a person's name or social security number, much quicker and easier. The dissemination of child pornography online also has garnered widespread public and law-enforcement attention. Other offenses, such as stalking victims via the Internet, have only recently begun to be addressed.

What is the mean by El Dorado? This word El Dorado (Spanish for "the golden one") is the name of a Muisca tribal chief who covered himself with gold dust and, as an initiation rite, dove into the lake Guatavita.Imagined as a place, El Dorado became a kingdom, an empire, the city of this legendary golden king. So, this mean that computer criminals have found their new kingdom as at smartphones!!!
According to the news on 17 Feb 2011 in Barcelona, Smartphones are the new El Dorado for computer criminals and many owners are unaware of the risk or what to do about it, security experts warn.
As sales of smartphones and Tablets have started to outpace those of personal computers, criminals are increasingly targeting the devices, security companies say.
It is a menace for both consumers and businesses because many people use their smartphones or tablets to access corporate networks without authorisation.
"We all do something to protect our computers and personal information from hackers," he said. "In mobile computing we need this as well."
Mobile devices increasingly hold personal and financial information, he warned. "I believe, I contend that security is one of the most important features," the Intel boss said.
There are already some 1,000 different pieces of malware circulating that target smartphones, according to Kaspersky Lab, a leading computer security firm.
One of the most prevalent is malware which has the phone make surreptitious calls or send text messages to premium numbers, landing the criminals fat fees and phone owners with fat bills.
Nowadays, many people are using smartphones for work and study instead of bringing the larger netbook or notebook around. Malaysian also not excluded, so there is a few new antivirus program launch that can be use as references to those who are using smart phones. Remember, Prevention is better than cure!!!
